Cirencester College A-level History student Peter Gray recently came runner up in an essay writing competition.
Peter, who is in his second year of study on the Dictatorship and Democracy pathway, alongside A-levels in Politics and Law, was encouraged by his History teacher to enter into the Richard III Society 2021 essay competition. Contestants were asked to write an essay on a topic relevant to ‘The Life and Times of Richard, Duke of Gloucester (Richard III) 1452-85.
Not only did Peter’s essay titled ‘To what extent was Richard III defiled by History?’ earn him second place in the competition, but also high praise from the judges, who commented that his submission was “A fascinating essay drawing on the author’s knowledge of Elizabethan literature and 15th Century history. A thorough piece of research was supported by a wide range of early modern primary and modern secondary sources.”
As a result, historian Matthew Lewis, who is chair of the Richard III Society, donated a signed copy of his book “Richard III: Loyalty Binds Me” to the College library.
Peter’s History teacher Sergio Tomasetto said “Peter was the runner-up in the Richard III Society essay competition and won the college a very useful prize! Well done to Peter for his passion and dedication to History, which made this achievement possible.”
